Biography
 

On 04 May 2009, Sanat Kumar Basnet ascended to the highest stratum of Armed Police Force being promoted to the post of Inspector General of Armed Police Force by the decision of Government of Nepal. He was assigned as officiate Inspector General from 15 April 2009.

Inspector General Mr. Basnet was born on 10 June 1958 at Chhorambu, a remote village of Khotang District, Sagarmatha Zone. He is youngest among three sons of Late Karna Bahadur Basnet and Mina Kumari Basnet. He completed schooling from Bhagawati Secondary School, Sunsari, Certificate level from Minbhawan Commerce Campus, Baneswor and Bachelors degree from Thakur Ram Multiple Campus, Birgunj. Moreover one year masters' degree in military science from Army Command and Staff College, United Kingdom. Grown up in a simple family, Inspector General Mr. Basnet married Mrs. Ratna Basnet at the age of 26, in the year 1984. He has three daughters and one son.

Inspector General Mr. Basnet joined service as second lieutenant in then Royal Nepalese Army on July 17, 1981. He completed officers' basic training from Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, India in the year 1981/82. He has attended several national and international trainings and number of workshops and seminars including Platoon Commander's Training and Commando Training (India,1983), Infantry Demo and Field craft Instructor Course (UK,1984), Pathfinder Course (USA,1984), Tough Training - Ranger's Course (USA,1985), Airborne Training (USA,1985), Junior Staff Course (Nepal,1985), Officers D and M course (India,1987), Company Commanders Course (Nepal,1988), Army Command and Staff College (UK,1994), Battalion Commanders' Course (Nepal,1998), Intelligence in Combating Terrorism and Advance Intelligence Training (USA,2001), International Peace Support Border Management Briefing Program (UK,2003), Senior Crisis Management Course (USA,2006) and APCSS Executive Course (USA,2008) and more than two dozens of Professional trainings in Nepal.

Inspector General Mr. Basnet was transferred to Armed police force in the post of Senior Superintendent from the post of Lieutenant colonel of then Royal Nepalese Army in the year 2002.

During his service period, Inspector General Mr. Basnet has congregated wide-ranging experience in Training, Management and operations. He has spent most of his time in Instruction proceedings. He has served as an Instructor of Officer cadet basic training for three years, Chief instructor of Intelligence staff officer's course, ADC to the chief of Nepalese Army for four years, Founder Commandant of Nepal Army Intelligence School, Kharipati, Commanding Officer of Scout car Company for two years, Battalion Commander of Shree Nath Infantry Battalion, Commandant of Armed Police Training Center, Bhaluwang, Commandant of Armed Police Training College, Kakani, Brigade commander of Eastern Regional Armed Police Force HQ, Baraha Brigade, Pakali, Head of Human Resource Development Department and Head of Operations Department. He has performed his important responsibilities in making Armed Police Personnel effective and efficient as head of Human Resource Development Department, which is one of the significant department to maintain work and procedure of Armed Police speedy and transparent.

Due to training competencies and course reports, Inspector General Mr. Basnet stood up as a high profile officer. As he has spent substantial portion of service as instructor, he has focused on re-evaluating instruction methods and predicting future challenges, he has started Humanitarian Action and Crisis Management Training to cope up with future challenges.

He has been awarded with various medals and decorations like Gorkha Dakshin Bahu (Third), Gaddhi Aarohan Rajat Mahotsab Medal, Disaster Rescue Medal, UN Service Medal (Twice), Foreign Service Medal (Twice), Prahari Ratna, Birendra Aishwarya Memorial Medal, Military Service Medal, Gorkha Dakshin Bahu (Fourth) and numbers of Appreciation Letter in recognition to his service rendered.

Inspector General Mr. Basnet has served twice in the United Nations Peace keeping Mission for the period of Six months in Lebanon and one year as military adviser in Former Yugoslavia.

Inspector General Mr. Basnet has visited more than 31 nations including Japan, France, Thailand, Greece, Canada, Austria, Spain, United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Netherland, Ghana, Liberia, and Canada and has gained operational procedure of security organs.

Keeping respect to the uniform and taking it as service, Inspector general Mr. Basnet is determined on the norms that every service holder should be loyal to the service and should be ready to sacrifice for it. Capable to mould oneself and all subordinates with time efficient leader having clear image Mr. Basnet has contributed a lot for organizational development and magnification.
